Find yourself transported from the Atlas Theatre to the nightclubs of Dublin for a selection of sizzling soul classics from legends including Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations and Otis Redding.
We caught up with Joe Ringer ahead of its debut at Potters to find out more about the show and what songs you can expect to party along to…
Why did you decide to put together The Soul Commitments?
The Joe Ringer Band has been playing together for almost ten years now, from cruises and theatre shows to large events all over the UK. We have always loved playing the hits of The Commitments and last year decided to put together our own show, The Soul Commitments. We are a live 12-piece band, featuring an amazing horn section and with a gorgeous backing vocal trio too.
What songs will we be able to hear?
The show will feature all of the biggest hits from the smash hit 1991 film The Commitments based on the Roddy Doyle novel, which centres around a promoter putting together an R&B group in Dublin, playing the greatest soul hits of the 60s and 70s. We perform the films biggest hits, with dance floor fillers from Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin and Al Green. It will be a really feel-good night with songs like Mustang Sally, Try a Little Tenderness, Proud Mary and I Heard it through the Grapevine being performed! The audience will be transported back to the glory days of the 1960s when Motown ruled the airways and is a chance for people to get up and dance the night away to all of their favourite soul tunes. There will be big sing and dance numbers!
Do you love soul music and who are your favourite soul artists?
I’ve always loved soul music and was brought up on the sounds of Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye. It is an honour to perform such timeless classics with such amazing musicians. As well as singing and leading the band, I arrange all the music and always try my best to stay faithful to the style of the original. We can’t wait to bring our brand new show to Potters and party the night away with all of the amazing guests.
