A massive congratulations to the Just 2019 World Indoor Bowls Championships Open Singles winner, Stewart Anderson.
What an incredible final between the number 9 seed from Lanarkshire and unseeded qualifier Simon Skelton from Nottingham.
The Scot dominated in the first set, winning 11-5 but it was a different story in the second set with both players producing an incredible game, but Skelton taking the set 8-6, resulting in a best of three end tie break.
However Anderson played the big bowls at the most crucial of times, winning the best of the three end tie break with his very last bowl on the first two ends to seal the title 2-0.
Fresh from winning the title, we caught up with Stewart for a chat moments after he claimed victory on Sunday 27th January…
Congratulations on your win Stewart. How did you find the game?
I think it was my day today and I just seemed to have a wee bit of lady luck on my side. Simon did an amazing job and was really determined and gritty. I feel I dominated the first set, but Simon came out really well in the second set, and I got a bit frustrated and did wonder how the match was going to go! Simon played really well and put me under a lot of pressure. The tie break ends were really exciting too and it could have gone either way. Every time I thought I was holding a good head, Simon seemed to keep producing a really good running shot. It was my day though and I’m so proud to win it again…it feels incredible.
Who were here cheering you on?
It’s amazing that all my family travelled down…my mum and brothers, and fiancée. It felt amazing to have them all here to watch me win.
What are you doing to celebrate?
Well I am getting married this year to Claire so I won’t be seeing any of the money as it will be going towards the wedding! I will definitely be having a drink to celebrate though. I’m not sure how I am going to get the trophy home though!
What has been your greatest bowls moment?
Winning these Championships in 2013 and winning it again this year!
How did you first get into bowls?
Because of my father and grandparents, and I started playing aged 12.
Will this win make you world number one now?
I will have to wait and see, but I won the Scottish international for the first time in 2018, so it is looking good, but we will have to see what happens!
Thanks Stewart and a massive well done to our 2019 winners…
