At Potters we have a variety of bars and comfortable seating areas to enjoy a drink and an impressive drinks menu to choose from, including some special seasonal favourites! We caught up with Simon Boumford from bars to find out what is on offer, some fun stats on how many pints are pulled and how many biscuits are served with our hot drinks, as well as why the bar team love to chat with guests…
Simon, can you talk us through our drinks menu?
We have a huge variety on offer and something for everyone. We have beers, lagers and ciders, including Stella Artois, Carling, Corona and Desperado. Gluten free ales include IPA and Old Speckled Hen. Gins are really popular and we have Bombay Sapphire, Gordon’s and flavoured ones such as blood orange, parma violet and rhubarb and ginger. Vodka includes Hendrick’s and our dark rum Kraken is really popular, and we have many more spirits and brands to choose from.
We have recently been reviewing our wine menu, which still features favourites with Argentinian Malbec, a Chilean and New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, Californian Zinfandel, Prosecco, Champagne and Italian Pinot.
Our cocktail menu has also been revamped and includes a Mojito, Piña Colada, Pink Berry Fizz, Woo Woo, as well as non-alcoholic options such as Potters Punch, Virgin Strawberry Daiquiri and Coconut Dream.
Of course, we also have a range of soft drinks, including diet options, and hot drinks, such as flat white, latte and hot spiced apple.
What is our most popular drink?
In the daytime a latte and we easily serve 250 a day. In the evening it is a gin and tonic, a large one, and the Potters Star Martini and Piña Colada are the best-selling cocktails. On family breaks it is Megashakes and the team are always blending away in the summer making them fresh! We’ve actually been running a Megashake World Cup competition with the team to come up with which ones we will be doing next!
Do you every have any requests?
We do from regulars. A guest, who used to work at Potters, always asks for a Pink Lady cocktail and we have to remember every time how to make it for her! Another guest phones before she arrives for Babycham so we can order it, and another for organic wine. As long as we get some notice, we can try and order something specific in.
Have you got any fun stats on how many pints we pull a day?
Not including drinks inclusive or in our restaurants, we serve on average 480 pints a day, 105 glasses of wine, 350 Lotus biscuits (not to mention ones occasionally eaten by staff!) and in the summer around 1,500 Megashakes.
Do the team get training on drinks?
Yes we do and it is really important. We want them to taste and learn about key notes and character so that they can advise and be knowledgeable for guests. We have about 25 members of the team, plus casuals at busy times of the year.
What is the best thing about working on the bars team?
We love talking to guests and getting to know them, and many of them enjoy having banter with us. As a team we get on so well, which is important as they can be long days, sometimes starting at 8.30am for some of the team and finishing at 4am for others. I love working in the Atlas Theatre bar, as the atmosphere is incredible.
Lastly, can you tell us about our special Halloween cocktails?
Yes we have some special ones for 2019 for the adults, which Lucy from the team designed. ‘Black Magic’ is made from Cointreau, Vodka, cranberry juice, sugar cane and grenadine, and is garnished with worm sweets! ‘Frankenstein’ contains Apple Sourz, Cachaca, lemonade and blue curacao, and is garnished with green sugar and eyeballs!
At Christmas we have gingerbread lattes and mulled wine, and we will also be running a Christmas cocktail naming competition on social media soon, so keep an eye out.
We are hoping to do something special for the centenary year too, such as a 100 year ale or cocktail.
