An interview with ‘Heshima presents: The Soul Brothers’ – talking the Grammy’s, Michael Jackson and Motown

'Heshima presents: The Soul Brothers' have been entertaining guests this Summer with their amazing soul vocals to some of the best soul songs of all time.

During their career, the boys have worked with top singers, choreographers and artists in the UK, performing the best of Soul and Motown, with sweet harmonies.

The trio is comprised of Heshima Thompson, Meshach Spooner and Max Barnes-Davy. Heshima has acted in Spooks, Eastenders and The Bill, sung backing for Amy Winehouse, performed at The Grammy’s, MOBO’s and MTV EMA’s, and worked with Rudimental, Taio Cruz and John Newman. We caught up with him for a chat…

Can you tell us about the group?

“We are a new school group who love old school music. We put our Morden (North-West London, where the boys are from) spin on old school classics. We make the choreography, clothes and overall vibe of the show more modern and then we sprinkle loads of energy on top. We have been friends since childhood and love what we do, and there is no greater pleasure for us than bringing our audience joy, happiness and great memories.”

What songs do you perform?

“For Potters we do our Motown show, with everything from The Temptations and The Jackson 5, to Luther Vandross and Jackie Wilson. In other shows we do, we perform current songs like Uptown Funk, to rock classics like Livin’ on a Prayer.”

Favourite song to sing live?

“We love all these great songs, so it’s hard to choose just one. Maybe (Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher or I Feel Good.”

Do you dance too?

“We are all great movers and dance is a massive part of our show. We have our own dance called the 'Soul Step' that we teach our audiences all over the world when we perform and they love it.”

How often do you learn new songs?

“As we travel the world performing there is always new songs for us to learn or incorporate. If it's not new songs, then it's new routines, arrangements, wardrobe and some new element.”

How long have you been together for?

“Heshima presents: The Souls Brothers has been together for two years, but we've been working together much longer.”

Do you get on?

“Like a house on fire, and there are no better people we would choose to be in a project with. We are very honest about things that aren't working or aren’t right, and every now and then things do happen, but everyone takes responsibility and commits to being results focused in solving it. Everyone is passionate about what they do and passionate about delivering the best show possible, so we really couldn't ask for better people or a better attitude to work/perform alongside.”

Highlight of your career to date?

“Performing on the Grammy's, MTV EMA and Mobos.”

What will guests be surprised to know about you?

“Meshach and Max are multi-instrumentalists and I am also a professional actor, starring in Prime Suspect, The Bill, Holby City, Spooks, Eastenders, and I toured the world as Amy Winehouse's backing singer.”

Favourite artist of all time?

“Michael Jackson.”

Have you had any song requests from guests?

“The Potters audience haven't requested any songs, but they've been so lovely and just said that they've been blown away by our authenticity, energy and talent. It's so humbling.”

What’s it been like performing at Potters this Summer?

“It's been a wonderful journey for us, as they have a wonderful team who really looked after us and gave us the space, time and support to translate our very dynamic show to their amazing and loyal audience. We have enjoyed every show and each one got better and better. When we’re not at Potters we’ll miss the wonderful staff and band, along with the awesome audience.”
