An interview with The Kingdom Choir™: “Gospel is at its best when it’s live”

| 3 min read

The Kingdom Choir make their debut at Potters Resort on Sunday 10th November 2019, following on from their mesmerising performance of Stand By Me at the Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, which was seen by close to two billion people.

They are incredible live singers and released their critically-acclaimed album, Stand By Me, in 2018. We caught up with Karen Gibson, choir conductor, for a chat ahead of The Kingdom Choir’s™ debut at Potters…

Who came up with the name The Kingdom Choir?

We have been together for 25 years and the name came to me in a dream. We were asked to bring the choir to Songs of Praise for the show’s 35th anniversary. I went to sleep and the name that I dreamt of was The Kingdom Choir.

Did you realise how monumental playing at the wedding of Harry and Meghan would be?

We didn’t have a clue. We thought it would be a bit of a platform, but we are still astounded at the scale of what happened after.

How does it feel knowing that you connected with so many people during that performance?

It's humbling and a real honour and privilege. We love that people connect with our music and the feedback that we have received has been amazing.

How long did it take you to plan your outfits for the wedding?

Haha - we had some hairy moments with that! However, our stylist, Jeanette Young London, is incredible and sorted out 30 people in about three weeks!

How often does the choir see each other?

We rehearse twice a week, but we are really good friends and some of us are family, so we will see each other outside of those times too.

How do you feel about the success of the album?

It has been amazing and we are so proud of the album. We recorded 19 songs over four weekends, and songs I love are Golden and Make You Feel My Love.

Are you already planning your next album?

Yes. We've got many talented singers in the choir and we've got things in the pipeline as we speak, so watch this space!

How long does it take for you to put an arrangement together and rehearse a song?

It really does depend on the song and the arrangement, but it can get done in a couple of weeks.

Are you looking forward to your tour?

We can't wait to connect with the audiences! Gospel is at its best when it's live, so we're really hoping it will be a brilliant experience for all those who come.

What can we expect from The Kingdom Choir’s performance at Potters Resort?

Good music, lots of fun and a good dash of love, hope and inspiration!

What is next for you all?

We're looking to tour in other territories, apart from the UK.

Thank you Karen. While Karen herself can't be there on the night, we can't wait to see the choir performing. Their gospel sounds will be incredible live in The Atlas Theatre. Plus see The Opera Boys performing on the same night.
