Meet The Team

Terry Murphy is Potters fun-loving activities manager and the one who gets you scaling walls, speeding on Rally Karts and having fun on Segways. We caught up with adventurous Terry to find out about his role, his favourite activity and just how quick he really is on the climbing wall…

Can you tell us about your role Terry?

I run the activities team and we are responsible for 17 activities on Resort, including Segways, snooker, KMX bikes, skate boards, the climbing wall and archery, so as a team we do a lot of fun stuff! I also spend time in the office, focusing on health and safety, training and researching new activities.

What is your favourite activity?

I know most of the team would say the Giant’s Swing because of the reaction from guests experiencing it for the first time, but for me it’s the shooting range, as we get a chance to really spend time with guests. And I think guests channel their inner James Bond when they have a go at it and hit a target! Talking of the Giant’s Swing, I was the first person to ever take it on, and I’ve now been on it 11 times, and still feel the good nerves as you go up and anticipate when the swing will be released. Segways are definitely the most popular activity with guests and each Segway records around 1,000 miles a year. In my younger and fitter days, I achieved three seconds on the easiest run of the climbing wall, but can’t come close to that now I’ve got a bit older!

What is the best thing about working at Potters?

Running activities every day is a dream job as we all have so much fun and get to play a small part in a guest’s holiday. I’ve worked at Potters for 12 years and I love the outdoors, so I’m very lucky. However, we do work outside in all weathers, which is amazing in Summer, but means that at certain times of year we do get muddy and wet! I love seeing our regular guests come back and also meeting new guests for the first time, and seeing them experience something new. Seeing the confidence on a youngster as they excel at an activity and then carry it on when they get home is incredible. One of my favourite things is to read some of the guest feedback and how much they enjoyed an activity, and they often describe our team as funny and silly.

What would guests be surprised to know about your job?

Probably all the safety checks that we do, which they don’t see, and the amount of knots and ties that the Giant’s Swing has! It takes 25 minutes to set-up and rig, and it has to be de-rigged after. Obviously making sure that all the activities are safe is the most important thing.

Any tips for guests this Summer?

On the Segway it would be to relax and have fun, and on the climbing wall to be steady and methodical, so you don’t miss the handholds and footholds. And I always tell kids just to try something new – well, that’s what I tell my own kids anyway, and nine out of ten times they want to do it again. Also try as much as you can as there’s so much to do.

There’s so many activities at Potters for you to enjoy, so why not have a go at dance classes, crazy cricket, fun darts, adventure golf, Segways, Rally Karts and much, much more. Let us know on Facebook what activities are your favourites.
