JUST. WORLD INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS @ POTTERS

DAY 3

Sunday 13th January

Saturday night saw Scots Paul Foster and Alex Marshall along with fellow countryman Ronnie Duncan and Colin Walker from Midlothian both securing their places against each other in the first of the World Pairs semi-finals tomorrow afternoon (Monday 14th)

In the remaining quarter finals today, it was the turn of two all-English partnerships to taste success and who will clash against each other for that coveted place in the final on Monday 21st January which will be a  Scotland v England stand off.

2014 winners Greg Harlow and Nicky Brett ended the dream of Aussie qualifiers Steve Rankin and Kyle McIlroy from Perth, scoring on the last three ends of both sets to move through 6-5, 9-2.

The other quarter final was a pulsating head to head with Mark Royal and Andy Thomson emerging as the winners against the new pairing of England’s Robert Paxton and Scotland’s Mike Stepney.

Both teams were clinical in their form, displaying relentless precision and continually peppered the jack in an exceptionally high quality exchange that  kept the audience on the edge of their seats.

The first set was tied at 6-6 playing the last end.  Paxton played an amazing last bowl to draw shot to a displaced jack which was sitting near the edge of the rink, however Thomson played a absolutely stunning reply, smacking the jack to the back of the rink and when the dust settled held the vital shot to take first blood.

The second set was also a close encounter with tightly packed heads the order of the day, but the verdict went to number 8 seeds Royal and Thomson, who won a photo finish 5-5, where a drawn set was good enough to see them through by one and a half sets to a half.

Royal and Thomson will have revenge on their mind though.  This will be a repeat of last year’s semi-final where they lost to Harlow and Brett 6-4, 4-5, 2-0.

** The chase for the World Singles crown begins tomorrow night with 2013 holder Stewart Anderson from Blantyre taking on Scottish qualifier Colin Walker from Dalkeith.
