Peter is currently working on a new album, celebrating his 25 years in music and featuring new material, and recently voiced rally car Ace in a new Thomas the Tank Engine movie.
We are counting down the days until he joins us once again at Potters for a One Night Break on Sunday 16th September 2018. Read on to discover how his music career started…
Andre, the youngest of six children, was born in 1973 in Harrow, London to Greek Cypriots, Savvas and Thea Andrea. His parents are Jehovah Witnesses and as a result he was brought up with very strict Christian and Greek traditions, including to respect your elders and always be polite.
At the age of six he and his family moved to Sydney, before they settled in Queensland on the Gold Coast in 1979. Peter remembers being excited about the move, as it felt like he was going on holiday, until he realised that it was going to be for the rest of his life. However, little did he know that he would eventually move back to the UK following the success of his music career in the 90s.
With a portfolio of eleven studio albums, three compilation albums and 28 hit singles, he has achieved 2.3 million sales in the UK alone.
Andre was exposed to music from an early age. His grandfather was a talented singer and sung in Greek churches.
In 1989, when Peter was 16 years old, he entered the Australian talent show, New Faces, and although he didn’t win the contest, was offered a recording contract of $146,000. This contract helped him to release his debut single, Drive Me Crazy, three years later, as well as his breakthrough second single Gimme Little Sign, which went to number three and lasted 31 weeks on the Australian music charts.
Keen to mimic the success of his second single, at 23 he released his second studio album Natural, which featured two hit singles, Mysterious Girl and Flava.
The popular song Mysterious Girl was originally named ‘Mysterious Man’. This was because it took inspiration from Shabba Rank’s song Mr Lover Man, however the catchy song was changed last minute so that it would resonate better with Peter’s mainly female fan base. When the single was first released in 1995 it reached number 53, however when it was re-released the next year, it went to number two on the UK music chart, and as a result encouraged him to move back to the UK. In 2004 the song made it onto the UK charts again, but this time became a number one hit following his appearance on the ITV show, I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here.
To date, the single has sold over a million copies in the UK.
Andre’s fourth single, Flava, was the follow up to Mysterious Girl and is his second best-selling single. When it was first released on 14th September 1996, it went straight to number one on the UK charts, which made it his first ever number one hit. It even hit the Spice Girl’s song Wannabe off the number one spot at that time.
Following the success of his two hit singles in 1996, he went on tour throughout the UK, Europe, Asia and Australia, which allowed him to pick up a multitude of national and international awards along the way.
After taking seven years out of the music industry, Andre appeared on ITV’s I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! While he was in the jungle, he wrote a song about his experience, called Insania – mixing together the words Insane and Mania. The single appeared on his fourth studio album, The Long Road Back and was released towards the end of 2004. It peaked at number three on the UK charts that year.
Over the past 12 years Andre has recorded seven more studio albums including A Whole New World, which he worked on with his ex-wife Katie Price, and Revelation which was awarded platinum status after selling 300,000 copies and peaking at number three on the UK albums chart.
Andre’s predominately pop music career took on a completely different genre in 2014, with the release of his first-ever Big Band, swing album, Big Night. The album featured the single ‘Kid’ which was chosen for the soundtrack to the film Mr Peabody & Sherman.
I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!
Andre appeared on the third series of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! While in the jungle he took on five gruesome bushtucker trials including the first LIVE trial which saw him place his head in nine boxes filled with various jungle critters including spiders, snakes and eels and using his mouth to take the star off the cord that was suspended from above.
Although he didn’t win the series, he did win the heart of contestant Katie Price. The pair of them had an on-screen romance within the jungle, and ended up marrying in 2005 and having two children, Junior and Princess.
Strictly Come Dancing
In 2015 Andre was announced as a contestant on the hit BBC talent show Strictly Come Dancing. Partnered with professional dancer Janette Manrara, he started the series receiving the highest score on the scoreboard, however it was their performance of the Charleston in week seven, which stunned the judges and viewers and gave them a high score of 38/40.
The couple successfully made it through to week 10, where they lost the dance off to fellow contestant Kellie Bright.
Besides from talent and reality TV shows, Andre has also appeared as a team captain on the ITV show Odd One In, as a judge on Your Face Sounds Familiar, guest-presented Sunday Scoop, and presented 60 Minute Makeover.
Peter is now married to Emily MacDonagh, and they have children, Amelia and Theo, together.
