Football has Wembley, cricket has Lord’s and indoor bowls has Potters Resort - and the countdown is now on to January 2020! We can't wait to welcome over 20,000 people when we host the Just 2020 World Indoor Bowls Championships. Taking place over 17 days, bowls biggest tournament will see the best indoor bowls players from across the world, coming from as far away as Australia, competing for victory between Friday 10th and Sunday 26th January 2020.
The blue carpet will be rolled out in the International Arena as bowls royalty steps up to the mat in five categories - the World Pairs Championship, Mixed Pairs Championship, World Under 25s Championship, Ladies Matchplay and the Open Singles Championship. The highlight of the indoor bowls calendar, it is the only world Championship final to be held in East Anglia and the final week is televised live by BBC TV.
Bowls fans will know that 2019 was another thrilling year with Scotland’s Stewart Anderson winning his second open singles title after defeating surprise qualifier Simon Skelton in the final. Julie Forrest of Scotland defeated Alison Merrien of Guernsey to win the women’s singles, while Scottish players Alex Marshall MBE and Paul Foster MBE won the open pairs title together for the fourth time. Somerset’s Robert Paxton and Cambridge’s Ellen Falkner won the mixed pairs event.
2020 is set to be another electrifying year and the winner of the Open Singles Final will be presented with a Langham blue glass trophy and a cheque for £50,000 – bowls biggest prize money. The International Arena seats 1,100 spectators.
We caught up with John Potter, who said: “2020 will be our 22nd year of hosting the Championships and also marks an extra special year for us at Potters Resort as we celebrate our centenary year. Nothing beats watching world class sport live and the tension mounts as each bowl is played, and each player walks out to flashing lights and music as they are cheered on by the friendly audience. It really is an exciting event for spectators and celebrates the sport of bowls, one of Britain’s quintessential sports.”
As well as day tickets being available for every day of the Championships, regular visitors know that the best way to soak up the atmosphere is to stay on a short break. As well as premier world bowls action with entry into the International Arena for every day they are on Resort, guests will also be sharing the same facilities and restaurants as the players. Each break includes comfortable accommodation, four meals a day for each full day, activities, use of the sports and leisure facilities, and live evening and late night entertainment.
Bringing the tournament to Norfolk was the brainchild of Potters Resort’s chairman and tourism innovator Brian Potter MBE, who passed away in November 2014. Trying to think of a way to encourage people to come to Potters midweek and all year round, he had his ‘Archimedes moment’ one day and developed the winning idea of offering bowls breaks and investing in bowls rinks. In 1997 work started on a six-rink international standard stadium at a total investment of £2.5m. The stadium officially opened in 1998 and when the World Bowls Council saw the facility in action they moved the championships to Hopton-on-Sea the following year.
